Indian Health Regulatory Bodies To Be Scrapped

Saturday 29 August 2009 - 09:55:20

A United council for all health related bodies seems to be a possible outcome in the restructuring reforms of the present Indian Government in the healthcare industry. The Union Health Ministry has decided to scrap all health regulatory bodies, including the Medical Council of India (MCI), Dental Council of India, Pharmacy Council and the Nursing Council. There will instead be a single regulatory body, the National Council for Human Resources in Health, which will oversee seven departments related to medicine, nursing, dentistry, rehabilitation and physiotherapy, pharmacy, public health/hospital management and allied health sciences. The move though still needs a formal government notification.
The existing councils have drawn criticism from all sections of society, have been unwieldy, and also have failed to provide a synergistic approach, it is pointed out. It also points that many of these councils have got judicial censure on several occasions.Criticisms on health education and health service being increasingly dependant on money despite the presence of independant councils also stood out. There is also an urgency in promoting high standards and incorporating innovation in health-related education. Sources said the task force report has been discussed with the Prime Minister on August 26, 2009.
